Basis organization
The State University of Library Studies and Information Technologies (SULSIT) was established by a
Resolution of the National Assembly of Bulgaria of 29 Sept 2010. It is the successor of the Specialised Higher School of Library
Studies and Information Technologies, the College of Library Studies and Information Technologies (CLSIT), the College of Library
Studies (CLS), the Institute of Library Studies (ILS) and the State Institute of Library Studies. SULSIT is member of the Balkan
Universities Network.
The curricula for the Bachelor and Master’s Degrees are in line with the requirements of
the Higher Education Act and the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
SULSIT has modern facilities to prepare their students. Specially designed and constructed
building includes a solemn hall; specialized seminar rooms, auditoriums, computer laboratory, "John Atanasov" with modern computer
labs with local networks with constant access to the Internet in which are taught modern information and communication technologies;
Library and Information center with reading room for 150 people, which has a specialized library collection with over 52,000 library
units and 80,000 documents’ depository; IP Point - Information and Consulting Centre for Intellectual Property; Career Center for
supporting the professional development of the students, the Learning and demonstration museum collection "Spirituality and Leadership"
museum collection of contemporary Bulgarian spirit; publishing house "Za Bukvite – Oh Pismeneh” "chapel "St. Nikolas" phonetic cabinet,
offices for faculty and administrative staff, meeting room, modern gym complex with lounge, tennis courts, fitness room, canteen, coffee club.
SULSIT has been built for more than 60 years and it meets well the needs of about 2000 students and over
150 full-time and part-time lecturers. The specialized seminars and cabinets have extensive training funds, a significant portion of them are
already bibliographic rarity.
The duration of regular and part-time training in SULSIT’s educational and qualification "Bachelor"
degree is four years. Along with basic knowledge of major specialty, the students receive very good training in information and communication
technologies, English and in some specialties also Russian.
Training in SULSIT for obtaining educational and qualification degree "Master" is regular and part-time
for some programs - and also distance learning, lasting three semesters of graduated "Bachelor" degree in SULSIT and other universities in
the country and abroad.
SULSIT trains also in educational and scientific degree "Doctor" in regular and part-time through self-study.
There are educational practice or specialist practice in the last year of training held at prestigious institutions, organizations and companies.
SULSIT’s graduates can work in libraries, publishing-houses, public administration, information business, information centers and
services, archives, museums, galleries and other cultural institutions.
SULSIT has a rich publishing activity of scientific production – it publishes monographs, "Proceedings of UniBIT"
Cyrilo-Methodian newspaper "Za bukvite - Oh pismeneh", scientific journal "Izdatel" with the Department of "Library and Social Sciences" of the
Veliko Turnovo’s University "St. Cyril and Methodius ", collections of reports from the annually held conference of November 1st - Day of
spiritual leaders which is SULSIT’s official holiday, and seminars, as well as textbooks and other teaching aids.
SULSIT has standard University Charter "Erasmus", which allows students mobility program for
lifelong learning and training at universities abroad for a certain period.
SULSIT actively participates in international career, international cooperation on bilateral
agreements with similar institutions in Russia, Germany, France, Poland, Serbia and Montenegro, and Turkey.
It’s IFLA’s member - International Federation of Library Associations, LIBER’s member - Association of European research
and academic libraries, ICOM’s member - International Council of Museums, the National Technical Committee for Standardization
in archive, library, information and publishing activities (TC 16), in Union of Librarians and Information Services (ULIS) and etc.
SULSIT supports the project by providing:
- Management support;
- Promote a favorable climate for the team in the SULSIT;
- Supports the dissemination of information and co-ordination with structural units and personnel;
- Assistance in order to liaise with national institutions, universities and experts;
- Assistance in view of the relations with international organizations, experts and networks;
- Workrooms, buildings and use of facilities;
- Communications;
- Administrative Services;
- Accounting;
- And other activities that contribute to the successful implementation of the project.
